Motion Removal in ElectroSpotmatic and SpotmaticMagic
What It Does
Motion Removal automatically removes moving objects (people, vehicles, reflections) from a sequence of images, leaving you with a clean shot of the static scene. This feature is perfect for architectural photography, capturing landmarks without crowds, or eliminating unwanted elements from your photos.
You can download test images for use with SpotmaticMagic from: Google Drive
When to Use It
Use Motion Removal when you want to:
- Remove People: Capture landmarks or buildings without tourists or passersby
- Eliminate Vehicles: Create clean street scenes without cars or buses
- Remove Reflections: Eliminate reflections from glass windows or water surfaces
- Clean Up Scenes: Remove temporary elements to show only permanent features
Requirements: Minimum 3 images (more images = better results), static camera position (tripod highly recommended), moving objects that appear in some frames but not others
How to Capture Motion Removal Sequences
- Enable Motion Removal: Tap the exposure control ring, find and enable the "Motion Removal" button
- Set Up Your Shot: Mount camera on tripod, frame composition
- Configure Capture Settings (optional): Frame count (7-15 frames), capture interval
- Capture the Sequence: Press shutter button, keep camera completely still
- Processing: Images are aligned, motion detected and removed automatically
Settings Configuration
Configure in iOS Settings → ElectroSpotmatic → Motion Removal Algorithm:
- Statistical Filtering (Recommended): Uses statistical analysis to identify and remove outliers
- Motion-Aware Processing: Advanced motion detection and removal
Best Practices
- Use a tripod (essential)
- Recommended: 7 frames for most scenarios
- Capture interval: 1-2 seconds for people, 0.5-1 second for vehicles
- Keep exposure, ISO, and white balance consistent
Troubleshooting
Moving objects still visible: Increase motion sensitivity, capture more frames (10-15), ensure camera is completely static
Static elements incorrectly removed: Decrease motion sensitivity, ensure consistent lighting
Processing takes a long time: Normal for high-resolution images (1-3 minutes for 7 frames)
Technical Details
- Minimum frame count: 3 images
- Recommended: 7 frames
- Maximum recommended: 15 frames
- Automatic alignment before motion detection
- Statistical filtering uses median and outlier rejection
- Processing time: ~10-20 seconds per frame
